On Sunday 4th May 2008, the Fitness Factory gym, Burnley, played host to the first round of the CNP Professional Strongman Premier League. This league, brought to us by 2 Bold Productions, is the UK's first Strongman League. This first round saw eleven athletes brave the wet weather to battle through six gruelling events. There was a £1200 prize fund available including £500 for first place and £50 for the winner of each individual event. A full breakdown of the events and winners is given below.

Farmers Walk -  Athlete to carry 128kg farmers down the 20 metre course and return with 156kg farmers. Time limit 75 seconds. If course not completed measurement to be taken.

In an event which saw over half the athletes fail to complete the course, Mark Lawson took the win with an outstanding time of 28.42 seconds.

A fantastic 17 reps from Simon Flint proved enough to claim first place from three other athletes who had to settle tied for second place with 15 reps.

Loading and Press -  Four 100kg cylinders to be carried 10 metres and loaded standing upright onto platform. Once all cylinders loaded athlete to press 100kg log for one rep. Time taken for each item loaded and after successful log lift.

Truck Pull -  7.5 tonne truck to be pulled over a 30 metre course. 75 time limit. Distance to be measured if course not completed.

This truck pull event saw some extremely fast times with just two tenths of a second between first and third place.

Mark Westaby took the win in this event with an impressive 17 reps with 13 reps proving unlucky for Lee and Simon.

Another 'storming' performance by Mark Westaby saw him take the win in this event, by a clear second.

Final Results

Three first places secured an overall first for Mark Westaby and meant he collected the majority of the available prize purse. Adam Townsend's consistent performance throughout meant he sat comfortably in second place. Mark Lawson was awarded third place on count back, after finishing on equal points with Simon Flint. This was an enjoyable event - despite the weather - and we are looking forward to round two of the league.
